LG Electronics India IPO: Apply or Skip?

Is This IPO Right for You?

If you’re looking to bet on India’s rising consumption story and the premium home appliances market, LG Electronics India deserves a serious look. Here’s what makes this company stand out:

  • Market dominance: LG leads in refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners, categories that matter most to Indian households.
  • Strong manufacturing base: The company runs production facilities in Noida and Pune, with a new large-scale plant coming up in Sri City. This “Make in India” approach gives it cost and supply advantages.
  • Pan-India reach: With 23 regional distribution centers and an extensive service network, LG can reach customers anywhere in the country.
  • Clean financials: LG India’s profit jumped 46% to ₹2,203 crore in FY25 on revenue of ₹24,631 crore. LG India has zero debt, and its ROCE stands at 42.91% as of March 2025. These are signs of a well-run business.

Key Risk Factors to Consider

Every investment has downsides. Here’s what could go wrong with LG India:

  • OFS Structure: Since this is purely an Offer for Sale, the ₹11,607 crore raised will go to LG’s Korean parent company, not to the Indian business. No fresh capital will come into LG India’s operations. If brand strength and market position matter more to you than capital deployment, this might still work for your portfolio.
  • Intense Competition: Samsung, Voltas, Whirlpool, and a host of Indian brands are fighting for the same customers.  Maintaining leadership requires continuous innovation and marketing investments.
  • Economic Sensitivity: Consumer durables are cyclical in nature and sensitive to discretionary spending trends, inflation levels, and broader macroeconomic conditions. Economic downturns can significantly impact sales volumes and pricing power.
  • Import Dependency: Some advanced components still come from abroad. If the rupee weakens or supply chains get disrupted, LG’s margins take a hit.
